The purpose of differentiating instruction using depth and complexity is to provide a more quality learning experience for each student. To challenge each student in their own respective talents and abilities, i.e. visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.To teach the student HOW instead of just because.

Key features of Depth and Complexity
Lower level thinking skills such as: identifying traits that lead to comparison of larger concepts, making analogies between similar/different items in the curriculum.
Mid-Level thinking skills: creating graphic organizers to explain/define a sequence of events or steps in problem solving, showing understanding of how to apply previously learned scenarios to new problems/tasks.
High Level thinking skills: Produce an original idea (story, solution, experiment, alternate outcome) and work through the possible outcomes; analyze relationships or patterns in stories or problem solving to arrive at a new idea.
